So far, I have used the unit once and it seems to be well built. Much better than the "standard" sprayers I have found at Home Depot. However, receiving an undamaged unit was another story. The first order arrived after 9 days of waiting. It was severely damaged. The wand was bent (crimped) to the point of it being non-usable. The wand grip (on/off) was also severely bent, and the tank had a dent. I immediately called Amazon, and they agreed to overnight a replacement. However, I was then told they were no longer in stock, and I'd have to wait between a month to a month and a half!! They knocked a few dollars off the price (and it was already on sale) so the final price was too good to refuse. I waited. After 3 weeks, I noticed Amazon had it listed as in stock, so I called and asked them to make sure I got one of the remaining units. I told them the first unit was damaged, and could they make sure that I got a new and undamaged replacement. I was told the supplier is Chapin (direct) and they would make note of my request. The new unit arrived 2 days later, and I was very disappointed to see that this unit too was damaged. This time the wand and handle were fine, but the tank had a big dent. Since I needed the unit and had been waiting over a month, I decided to keep it (dent and all).
BOTH units I received showed up in UN-damaged (pristine) packaging! Since the units are all steel and brass, I found it impossible that they could have gotten damaged inside those boxes. This means that either they were damaged at the factory, and placed in the box un-noticed. Or (most likely) were returns that were re-packaged and sold as new. Although the unit works well and is solidly built, I recommend buying it in a store so that you can inspect it first. If need be, return it easily for a replacement. At this point, I don't trust Chapin.
On to the sprayer itself... When full (about 3 1/2 gallons) the sprayer can be relatively heavy. I am a big guy, yet carrying it around the yard by hand (no strap option) was a chore. If you don't need the larger 3 1/2 gallon capacity, a smaller unit would be much easier to lug around. The spray nozzle produces a "wide" spray. The pump is easily twisted to "unlock" and compress the air. A quick twist "locks" it again so that the handle can be used to carry it around. As I mentioned, I've only used it once, but my first impression is that overall it's a good sprayer. A bit larger and heavier than I imagined, therefore a strap option would have been a welcome (and smart) addition. Even though there is an optional strap listed for this sprayer, it is not built to accommodate it (no loops or any other way to attach). I chose this unit because there were optional accessories, one of which I needed. I wanted a sprayer that would have as long a wand as possible (I am spraying poison and want it to be as far from me as I could get it). Chapin offers a 12 inch straight extension (Chapin part number 3-7727) which made the wand's overall length about 36 inches. If the unit was not damaged, I would have given it 4 stars.
