I've had all sorts of these nozzles with the multiple patterns, and they just do not last.Then I found this one at Target about two years ago and was amazed how well it has performed when it's relatively inexpensive.But one day, after it's been on the hose for a few months, I tried to screw it off, and it has become permanently fused to the hose. When I mentioned it to my mom, who also has one, she said she had also experienced the same thing.So it's good and lasts long, but it will become part of your hose.

Melnor 3015 6-Cycle Electronic AquaTimer Digital Hose Timer Review

I have 4 of these and two have already broken.I bought them hoping they would be better than Melnor's previous model (bigger, rectangular looking green thing) which all four broke within a year.
NOTE, I take very good care of all of my tools.Change batteries, bring in during the winter, etc.This is a quality problem, not a user problem.
I have lost plants and wasted a ton of time messing with these things, changing batteries, looking for receipts, etc.
MELNOR, shame on you.This is irresponsible and you should recall and apologize for not doing your job (testing a product).

Gilmour 528T Solid Brass Twist Nozzle Review

You just can't do better than this good ol' fashioned brass twist nozzle.I've purchased and used the pistol grip and other types of water nozzles and they have all quickly failed in some way or the other. I will not try any other type - it was what I grew up with as a kid - my dad and my grandfather had and used this type of nozzle and to my knowledge the only reason they replaced them was because we kids managed to lose them somehow.Yeah, you have to go through a few more motions to use it, but it shuts off when you shut it off, it holds the spray pattern you set on it, and it is just about as durable as you can get.Plus, it works well with just about any water pressure, Buy it, use it, and have it forever. Nelson Industrial High Flow Nozzle Review

My husband bought this sprayer in early summer 2008.As a full-time fireman, he loves the fireman style nozzle because he's all about dispensing the most water in the least amount of time.The sprayer was used regularly last summer and fall and was used off and on during the winter months.My husband got it out the other day to start spring 2009 watering and it was leaking horribly.He took it apart and there's a piece inside that, according to him, should have been made of metal... not plastic.For as much as these sprayers are, they shouldn't be made of cheap parts... and surely should last more than a couple of seasons--and definitely more than a year!Beware!

You know, I hate to say it, but even after 40, I still love playing with the water hose.I mean, when watering the plants, I have always enjoyed practicing with my thumb over the opening to vary the different types of sprays I can make to water my trees, shrubs, and flowers.Only recently did I decide to break down and get a nozzle.I hesitated because after 40 years, I can recreate almost any spray that you can get with a nozzle with my thumb [or so I thought], and with a lot more entertainment in the effort.Yet, it was time to get a new hose because my old one kinked and was too short, and I had another opportunity to look for a good nozzle to go with it.

This nozzle is great!The pistol grip is comforable, even if the "trigger" hole is a bit cheesy, and it has a familiar feel with the lever.The lever has a "kickstand" to keep it actuated if your hand gets tired, and it has a dial in knob on the back to adjust the strength of the stream.If it just had those two features, I could really like this nozzle.

Now my experience with "dial a spray" type nozzle heads is that usually, they clog.So far, this hasn't been the case with this unit.And, really, this has the best and most practical variety of sprays available on a multi-spray nozzle head.I love the 'mist' setting, which when you are done with the plants goes great on the back of your neck without getting you soaked in the process.There are several other settings which are practical for different applications from watering delicate flowers without spraying potting soil all over the place, to giving that Japanese Maple an adequate summer drenching.And really, honestly, having all the settings makes it a little more fun in trying to figure out what works best for the application you need.I usually rotate between 4 or 5 of the settings, which is the most settings I have ever used on a nozzle.

Gilmour has a reputation for quality.While this is basically made out of plastic (some parts feel slightly rubberized) the construction seems adequate to hold up after a period of use.I don't say this lightly.If this product does break down prematurely, I will update the review immediately.But, I haven't had this long enough to give you any testimonials on how well it will hold up.Right now, I can only guess.

Overall, I was well pleased with this product.

Highly recommended.

UPDATE 08/20/09

Ok.I might have been a little optimistic about the durability issues.After a couple of months of extreme Oklahoma heat, repeated drops onto the sidewalk, and into the pinebark mulch, the spray is, well, a little wonky.What I mean by that is sorta like a showerhead.At first, the 'round' spray looked like a perfect circle, and now it has a few streams going astray.Still does the job.Doesn't leak.Probably will work within acceptible limits for years.But if you are a perfectionist whose wife doesn't like the front porch "puddly" because of stray sprays coming out of your nozzle, this doesn't look like a overly long term solution.I'd estimate 2 to 3 years tops.

Yet at the price point, you could probably replace it fairly often, and for that reason, I think I'll keep using it, or a replacement of it for a while.It is still the best multispray variety I have enjoyed, and that is the most important thing to me.

I bought one of these two years ago, seduced by the bright orange color. I paid locally retail about $50 thinking that if it was brass it must be good quality. Almost immediately I had to contend with inconsistent flow (I would set the end points for my odd shaped yard only to find that the next time I turned it on I would have to readjust it all over again). Sometimes it would get stuck at one end and not come back, but I would manage to get it working again. Finally after a long winter it was time for its third season...after 10 minutes fiddling trying to get it working properly for more than one cycle I realized it was dead and not going to oscillate any longer. I bought two "LR Nelson Simple Soaker Border Area Sprinkling System" from Amazon. I already had two other kits installed. Since the areas I planned to install them were far away from each other, I purchased this hose. With a few interconnecting parts from Home Depot, the job was done.
Now, I'm the happy owner of a irrigation/sprinkling system for under $200.
My wife is really happy, the vegetation too. No more 1-hour standing each evening, spreading water over our vegetable garden/shrubs/flower spots.

Pirit Water Line PWL-02-50 50 Foot Heated Water Hose Review

The hose has to be disconnected from the faucet after every use. This is not mentioned in the description. The hose connector does not heat, and if left on the faucet when not in use, the faucet will freeze. If you don't mind screwing and unscrewing the connector in cold temps after every use, this is a good product for you. A "quick disconnect" adaptor from Home Depot might be make this product more user friendly.

Dramm Rain Watering Wand Colormark 30" Length With 8" Foam Grip Review

The impossibility of having a "retail" watering wand last more than a growing season is what led me to the Dramm brand. I'd bought the cheap ones, bought the fancy ones, bought the ones that said "brass construction" (with hidden plastic insides- which quickly failed). None of them lasted long. For some reason, it infuriates me. I feel like I'm being forced to hand money over repeatedly for something that should be a one-time purchase.

So I pulled up Google, did some obsessive watering wand research, and found this.

First, Dramm is perhaps the most common US brand for nurseries and professionals. I snuck a peek at my local nursery-- yep, she's using Dramms.

Second, these Colormark wands are the top of the line, probably because of the (HEAVY!) all-brass valve at its base. (You can buy the valve itself, alone, for about $15-20). People use them for years and years. Not likely to fail. I found notes online that said that Dramm's plastic valve was prone to breaking after a year or two, like everyone else's, so this model was the one for me. I like the trigger handgrip types a bit better, but I'm willing to give up a little bit of ergonomics for reliability.

Third, should something on this wand fail or get bent or ruined, you can replace just that part; the heads, wands and valves are all sold separately.

Fourth, it's made to water plants with a gentle aerated flow. There's not 17 other silly settings (Water shaped like a Smile! Water shaped like a Vertical Line! Pounding Massage for your Plants! Etc) because they're unnecessary for most gardeners.

I'll come back and report if I have any trouble, but I don't expect to do so.

I'm all about buying Quality once rather than buying Cheap repeatedly. This baby costs less than I've spent on two pieces of junk at the big box stores in the past two years.

Melnor/Gardena 101 Flowmeter Water Timer Review

The 101 is a great timer. I like the fact that it's powered by the flow. It does have some problems though.
This timer(flowmeter) is cheap. Too cheap. I've purchased more than 30 and watched them age and product evolve over the last 10 years. 10 years ago they worked flawlessly in the original models. No leaks and no failures. Five years ago Melnor went to a design that incorporated plastic parts, but I don't think there was problem in that development, but coincident with that and other modifications, was chronic leaking.
The problem lies primarily in the way the current design threaded female receptor connects to the frame. They use a small screw to secure the female threaded adapter to the body. It leaks, at least on those mfg'ed in the last 3 years.
Another leak point occurs under the dial. There shouldn't be a problem here because the dial is actually independent of the spring loaded shut-off valve. The dial gear train merely releases the spring. Previously, these problems didn't occur. I wish I had bought a batch of the old units.
Both of these complaints point to quality control. In a given mfging run several units may have problems. The probability of getting a problem unit has risen from 5% five years ago to an amazing 30% now. If you doubt, ask Yardbirds, that is, if they would bother to collect such records.
I keep buying them in hopes I will get a few good ones. I'd be willing to pay twice as much for out of the box leak free reliability, at least the reliability they used to have. Quality has fallen partially because the company believes they can't sell a non-electric unit at a price that could support the quality.
I don't know what others are doing with the 101, but these reports about getting 2 - 3 years out of them don't square with my experience. They last indefinitely even while exposed to the elements. I've yet to have one fail as long as it wasn't a failure out of the box.
Another thing: the sun's UV erases everything printed on the dial, so you have to emboss your own set points. No biggee, but the company incurs superfluous cost in providing all this gallonage and hours, which is also rendered superfluous by variations in flow velocity and imprecision in quantities desired. The company should leave it to the user to determine how far to rotate the dial for some preferred quantity of water.
Last thing: Don't rotate the dial beyond 210 degrees. The unit will act as though it's locked ON.

Nelson 50230 Metal Vane Square Pattern Spray Whirling Sprinkler Review

I purchased three different sprinklers in the hope of finding a good one...all from this manufacturer. For the price I was a little skeptical but all were well made - all metal construction - but this was by far the best of the lot. The distribution pattern mimics rain - very even and good coverage throughout without excessive soaking in one area and dry patches in others. Droplets rather than mist so less evaportation - important in Florida - but the droplets are very fine so not prone to harm even tender young seedlings. Another nice feature is the ability to daisy chain several together. I'm back to buy a few more - great price, excellent product. I'll try to update later to discuss durability but at least initially - very pleased.

Chapin SureSpray 1-Gallon Sprayer #20010 Review

I was paying a professional pest control company $300 per year to spray my house once per quarter for bugs. Like many others, I need to find ways to save money so I did a little research and learned that for the price of one of these gallon sprayers and some bug killing solution I can do my own pest control for about $20 per year! What a great savings and since I've been doing it myself, I find a lot less live bugs in my house and more dead ones. I think I do a more careful/thorough job... save money and better results!

Swan Soft And Supple SNSS34075 3/4-Inch x 75-Foot Green Garden Hose Review

When I first opened the box and checked out this hose I actually laughed out loud. There is a bit of comedy to a hose titled "soft and supple" being so stiff. Had they not titled it soft and supple I would have rated it an extra star, but they kind of set themselves up. While it's not the stiffest hose I've ever owned, and I've owned many hoses, it's certainly stiffer than a rubber, or flexogen 3/4" garden hose. But the supple issue aside it looks to be a perfectly decent quality rugged hose. The ends are medium quality I would say, certainly better than stamped ends but not as good as all machined ends. For the price, which is nearly half the cost of a flexogen hose, I would say this is a very good value. Had it been more supple and had all machined ends I would have given it 5 stars. Maybe for the price it deserves 4 stars, but I'm sticking with 3. Cheers !

Weber 7501 Hose and Regulator Kit (14-1/2-Inch) Review

I recently picked up this same Weber regulator.Believe it or not, I had a squirrel eat through my supply hose.It was old and covered with a "garnish" of drippings from meals gone by, and in his earnest he chomped all the way through the hose and drained the tank.I will admit that at first I thought I could seal the hole with the great fixer upper, duct tape.But it was a no go.After refilling the tank, the instant smell of gas permeated the air.(If this happens to you, or you get a hole in yours for any reason, forget the duct tape.It will leak anyway and be dangerous).This Weber assembly is pretty much the one that is found around here no matter where you go, so I picked it up.My grill is a Charbroil, but I feel that this hose can be made to fit any grill.The tank connector is a universal fit and will screw easily onto any tank.Its the other end that where you may have to improvise.Apparently the fitting at the end of the regulator on newer grills has been simplified to a screw on like the tank side, (took them long enough).My old time dependable grill had a regulator that was not so accommodating.I solved the problem by completely cutting the fittings off and twisting the end over the regulator valve.Although its relatively easy to slip on, the regulator valve is thickly threaded and the hose stays tight and secure. Even so, when dealing with gas its best to make sure, so I installed a small worm clamp around the end and the job was done.Safe and completely without leaks.

Its my opinion that if you are in the need for a new supply line on your gas grill, no matter what brand it is, this universal kit should fit it nicely.If its a newer one the job becomes a simple matter of screwing to ends on.If you have an older one, you can improvise as I did and be grilling before you know it.Its an easy job.And if you are an online shopper, I feel that ordering this kit here on Amazon will save you a lot of time running around wondering which one to get.Recommended should you ever have an aggressive squirrel in your future...

Flexon 5/8-Inch by 75-Foot Forever Plus Garden Hose #FXG5875 Review

I was strolling through my local warehouse discount store about six months ago and passed by a pallet of garden hoses. Hmmmmm. Could I use one of these? Well, it was 75-feet long and I've always had difficulty with reaching one corner of my small lot. It looked like a good quality hose. It had a fancy handle, or way of attaching it to the faucet, that was billed to be much easier and better. The price was quite reasonable. I couldn't resist. The hose went into the cart. I hate shopping at discount warehouse stores. There's just too many tempting impulse items. I always end up spending much more than intended.

In any case, the hose has proved to be quite good. It reaches from my back faucet to the most remote corner of the yard. The quality, indeed, appears to be quite high. I particularly like the "Flex-Guard" collar, the part that fixes onto the faucet. It works easily and efficiently and is the best connective device I've ever had on any hose. About the only complaint I have about the hose is that it has a propensity to develop kinks rather easily. That can be annoying. It was particularly vexing in the early life of the hose when it had the spiral curves inherited from the rolled coil it was sold in. As it has been used, the kinking problem has lessoned, but it still kinks more than my other hose. All in all, I'd rate it as a very good hose and my cost was quite a bit less than the price cited here, so that made it a good bargain also. It's a welcome addition to my yard and garden supplies. I don't know much about hoses, but I wouldn't hesitate recommending this Flexon Forever Heavy Duty hose.

Ames True Temper 2370500 Reel Easy Decorative Hose Reel Review

Don't buy this product. The feeder hose comes out of the box at ground level and thus must make a 90 degree turn. The hose was kinked at this point as it came out of the box. There is no way to fix the kink. The only possible way this product can be used is if the left side is hung out over a deck or step so the hose can come straight down and make a gradual turn. I went to ACE and got an elbow and some hose clamps to make the turn. No way a customer should have to do that!

Out of all these hoses I believe the 5000 series Neverkink offers the best balance of flexibility and kink resistance. They appear durable and long lasting also. Its important to follow the instructions when you first uncoil your new hose. I roll it straight and get all the twists out by making sure the stripe is straight. I let it lay that way in the sun for a day and afterwards this hose will not kink in my experience. Amazon has a great deal on these hoses. I'm very happy with mine.
